Gov. Sonny Perdue wants to raise fines on speeders and others who engage in "trauma-causing behavior" on Georgia's roads.

Perdue said he will submit legislation on Feb. 8 with the goal of reducing traumatic automobile accidents and providing more money for trauma care in the state. State Sen. Ronnie Chance (R-Tyrone), one of the governor's floor leaders in the Georgia Senate, will introduce the "Super Speeder" legislation when the General Assembly reconvenes on Thursday.

Driving more than 85 mph or more anywhere in Georgia and 75 mph or more on a two-lane road would be classified as a "super speeding" offense, adding an additional fine of $200, which will be administered by the Georgia Department of Driver Services (http://www.bizjournals.com/search/bin/search?q=%22Georgia%20Department%20of%20Driver%20S ervices%22&t=atlanta).

The legislation also calls for an additional $300 fine for license reinstatement for DUI, vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle or feticide by vehicle. There would also be an additional $200 fine for license reinstatement for racing, fleeing and attempting to elude and leaving the scene of an accident (all currently receive an automatic suspension), and an additional $100 fine for license reinstatement for other moving violations (in addition to the $210 current fine).

Fines would also be assessed based on the number of points accrued against a driver's license: $100 fine at 7-9 points; $125 fine at 10-12 points and $200 fine at 13-14 points. Georgia drivers are subject to having their licenses suspended at 15 points.

In 2006, traffic accidents caused more than 1,700 fatalities in Georgia and cost the state about $7.9 billion. Average speeds on metro Atlanta interstates are among the highest in the country at 75 mph, which is 20 mph over the speed limit.

Perdue said early estimates show the Super Speeder legislation could generate up to $25 million to $30 million annually. The additional fees, after administrative costs, would be used to fund a trauma care system.

"There is a clear link between the people who cause deadly accidents on our roadways and the rising strain on our hospitals' emergency services," Perdue said. "We're going to hold accountable people who repeatedly engage in dangerous activities, and I hope that these increased fines will give them incentive to stop their behavior and make our roads safer."

Pretty much everyone who drives on GA 400 would get fined in that case lol.

get rid of all the people that cant drive. Make the driving test harder. Raise the speed limits in straight areas. OUTLAW NON-HANDS FREE CELL PHONES IN CARS.

In the morning or early afternoon right after lunch...you cannot drive on ANY highway in ATL doing 55~65 without almost being creamed by someone. Everyone drives 75+.

4:30 to about 6:30 I20:

Slow lane is about 65~70
Middle lane is about 75~80
Fast lane is about 80~90 depending on area

Saw this on the news last night. I never have an opportunity to go that fast. My commute is on 75 during rush hour both ways.

I think its bullshit, it would probably take me an extra hour to get to Tampa if I had to drive 10mph slower just to avoid that. Also I have a feeling a majority of those fatalities occured from people who were DUI. Even if this does pass it probably will have an extremely low effect on the speeds people drive in Atlanta, the only way you are going to slow people down is with rolling road blocks.......oh.......wait.........those kids did that and it caused a huge traffic jam and resulted in a bunch of road rage.

Accidents are going to happen in Atlanta no matter what, its a combination of things.
1)Drivers test is far to easy
2)Lack of Signaling
3)Cell Phones
4)Not checking mirrors etc.
5)4million people living in an area where the roads are intended for maybe 1million
6)DUI
7)Speed

I just dont agree with the fact that; some interstates are 70mph, if you go 15 over, you're screwed. If the speed limit was 35 and your going 85, hell yeah take em to jail while your at it.

Yea thats definately something they need to take into account. There is no reason for someone to go 85 in a 35 unless they are in an ambulance saving someones life. I'll give you there is really no reason to speed in general but these fines are pretty high for 15 over.

"decrease trauma-causing behavior" what does this mean?
just another bullshit political catch phrase of the week.

"Average speeds on metro Atlanta interstates are among the highest in the country at 75 mph"
makes me feel a little Italian :)

"early estimates show the Super Speeder legislation could generate up to $25 million to $30 million annually."

The real reason behind this idea. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this money ended up going to some other area than originally intended.

-fixed.

I agree with some, but not all of it. They are making it sound like the Atlanta streets are lined with speed demons waiting to crash into you. They obviously have never been to Miami......

I also don't see how 85+MPH would classify you as a "super speeder".. heck.. SEMI's go that speed on their way to Tennessee or the Carolinas.... Now if it was 100+MPH I could understand....

My buddy got pulled over on the conjunction of I-75 and I-285 once with me in the passenger seat. He got pulled over for "weaving in and out of traffic recklessly" according to the officer. We got off with a warning and he said if we're in a hurry, just stick to a lane and don't go over 90mph.

So yeah, don't go over 90mph on I-75 or I-285.

man thats sooo bs. driving 65 in the morning from marietta to stockbridge, after u get past 285, you would be killed by all the speeders and people trying to rush to work. i have to go average of 75-80 just so i dont get my ass crushed in....so i say we make drivers license tests harder and people need to learn how to drive. thats it.

02-09-2007, 02:12 AM
i honestly have more issues with the mofos doing 45-60 in the LEFT LANE than speeders. if i see someone hawking my ass in and i'm in the left lane pushin it, so long as i have ENOUGH TIME FOR THEM TO SEE I'M GETTING OVER, i simply get to the the next lane. not like the majority of asses that will see a speeder, and though they have a clear right lane, stay in the left lane refusing to get over.

Purdue has been doing good, until this.

If I'm going 90 in the hammer lane and I don't have slow asses in my way, how do I cause an accident? I never really have to move, except to slow down for slower traffic, right?

Now compare that to how many lane changes you have to make to get around slow asses that are running at or below the flow of traffic, yet are hell bent on staying in the left lanes. It causes faster traffic to have to weave in and out to get around them, right?

Which of those two scenarios are more likely to cause an accident? One where you are staying in 1-2 lanes ALL THE TIME or one where you have weave in and out of traffic across all 6 lanes???

Folks, the problem is not just plain ole speed. It's crappy drivers that need not be on the road at all. Left lane is for passing and faster traffic. It's in every damn driving book from the age of 12. Turn signals are a good idea. Slower traffic keep right is a good idea. Proper lane change techniques are a good idea. There are far better ideas to avoid and reduce accidents than merely saying "slow down to a crawl" as the answer. It's not. Never has been. Never will be.

The reason why Germany has an autobahn and doesn't have as many highway fatalities on it as WE do in our freeways is because over there drivers ABIDE by the general rule of slower traffic keep right. If you're going 100 mph and you're the only one in the lane, what's the problem? If you're going 100 mph in the middle of 100 cars, there's the problem.

I think Purdue should concentrate on taking away licenses from people that have no business having one in the first place, i.e. older people that can't hardly see, teenagers that think they're last name is Andretti, people that love to talk on the cell phone while driving, drunk drivers, etc. THOSE are the people causing big fatality accidents.

he needs to add that law that louisianna put in the books not long ago about actually fining ppl that drive slower in the left lanes than the rest of the traffic flow...

Sol-Badguy

x2 to both above posts.

If people would actually go by "Slower traffic keep right", then we wouldn't have NEAR as many accidents.

Not to mention ban cell phones, putting on make-up n the car, and putting on make-up in the car.

but the problem is how do you prove that is court not as easy as speeding. this is just a way to raise revenue that is the bottom line i will protest by super speeding and not stopping when they want to give me a ticket. who is with me if we all speed we the people set the laws which is why 90% of people in atlanta never get pulled over on 75/85 inside the perimeter until they go over 80 mph. this is bs.
