Need computer advice

Ok, decided to piece together my new computer instead of buying it from Dell or Ibuypower. My first time building one from scratch so I want to make sure I have everything I need. Sooo here's the list, and feel free to gimmie advice or opinions on parts chosen. I wasn't going for top of the line or anything, just something good for the future and to run Vista on. Also, the graphics card is going to be upgraded to a DX10 card once they come out, so not too worried about that. Please let me know if you know of anything else i need to buy.

Also, I'm planning on reusing some of the things from my old computer like the DVD writer and hard drive, but please still let me know if there is anything I'm missing. Thanks.

i would get a computer that doesnt have vista. i have read really bad things about it.

Id dump like $80 more into that and get a geforce 88xx series graphics card, those are dx 10 hardware certified IIRC. I think you're throwing your money away with the 700w PSU, you'd be perfectly fine with a 500w, especially since the core 2 duos use less power. Dunno how I feel about the ECS mobo either. Personally, I'd stick with MSI, Gigabyte, or ASUS, but thats just me.

would 500w be enough to run dual cards eventually? thats the main reason i was goin' with the 700w

165 for power supply... Try to find one that comes with the Case. I'm also pretty damn sure you can find cases with power supply for $40 bucks.

dude u have it all wrong

first off if your gonna use a ecs motherboard just go to fry's and get their e6600 combo with ecs mobo for 310
If you really want good cooling get a thermal take case or a lian li case. prices anywhere from 50 - 150
For a powersupply just get a OCZ gamexstream 600watt. its plenty.
For video card dont go dual graphics just get a 8800GTX or GTS 400 or 540 bucks. one of these will do better for you than a dual setup of similar price.
For ram there are tons of deals. can get 2gb from 220 to 150 from ddr2800 to ddr2 533.
If your a gamer wouls suggest a raptor hard rdive from western digital. 150gb for about 150$ but its 10,000rpm.

U can use onboard sound their pretty good now days

i would go with a 550W power supply. i think he needs to redo his selection. but the good news is, good choice of cpu :)

listen the best power supplys that i have personaly seen that are already in a case are antec solo's that come with a modular antec powersupply but i have also seen alot of them returned/blown up and i have gone thru alot of cheaper models as well trying to post a board... I KNOW cause i work at frys

i know what ur saying, but do people working at best buy know anything about tv's. most of the time no but they work there.

either way yeah alot of the "cheap" cases out there come with "cheap" power supplies. but i told him to get a good case which normally come with good power supplies.

btw i just saw somewhere the ocz gamexstream 600w for 80 and the 700 for like 90 or 100. illfind a link and post it later.
PS power supplies are only manufacturered by 3 different companies labeled and sold by 50+

also i would say depending on his needs is how he should decide.

antec sonata II with its smartpower 450watt would work well with his "original" setup but if he goes with a 8800 he will ned something more powerful.

Basically advice to the guy building is.

get a cheaper vid card if you have to, get some cheaper ram, get a cheap case, get a 6400 processor if you ave to but where u dont ever wanna cheap out is on your motherboard and power supply. Doesnt mean u have to buy a 300$ motherboard or a 500$ power supply. just means get something of a quality build

one last thing. Sorry about many posts in class and professor is boring me.

instead of the thermal take cooler i would go with a zalmam 9700. a little more pricey but one of the best air cooler you can buy by far. Just look out.... ive sliced my hand open in a couple places from the fins...

I would look into a different motherboard Abit, Asus, Evga to name a few. Get a ocz 600 watt psu and an 8800 series graphic card they are dx10. If your not overclocking stock cooling will be fine.

sigh hope he took some of our advice.. cus he could be getting alot better than what he put in his post
