while we're on the subject, I don't have emissions in WV, but they do check for a cat on state inspection times. Any suggestions? I was thinking of getting a test pipe/resonator and hoping I get an idiot inspector. thoughts?
They check emmisions on a federal level. Before they can produce a car in the US, every engine "family" has to pass a series of emission test. If that engine does not pass then the manufacturer is fined for every engine that is put into production(gas guzzler tax). Since no one is going to pay that for a 240sx they said screw it and put the KA in it. (more emissions in US than europe and Japan) Thank CARB.......

Actually the gas guzzler tax is not there for non emissions compliant cars, its for cars that don't meet the federal mileage standard. That's why its calleda gas guzzler tax. The trucks used the same KA that the 240's used, only the pulsars had a CA in them but the turbo version was never certified. Nissan didn't think the US people would pay the extra money for the SR powered cars so they never went through the trouble of making it work. As for using a test pipe, just gut the cat. Nearly equal flow and will pass a visual inspection.

don't have a cat now, straight all the way back from previous owner. If I had a cat I would gut it, but I would have to pay the moey for a cat and then gut it

they also didnt offer it because a majority of american drivers are dumbshits and cant handle a "higher" horsepower rwd car.

It was also feared that it would interfer with the already fragile market of the 300zx.

While we're on emissions.......... If you have a 1996+ car that gets an OBD "scan" emissions test, but your car is a 2003+, around the time where some auto makers started going to a CAN BUS comunications system, your car will not communicate with the current emissions software if it uses a CAN system. If your car is CAN equipped you will get inspected for cats and get a twospeed idle test (tail pipe test)........... just FYI.

Another reason they didn't bring the sr20det over here was insurance costs. Insurance companies started charging much higher premiums on ANY car that came with a turbo. That's why Mitsu only sold the Mirage Turbo in the US for one year.
