LS/Vtec build gone bad

An IA member inquired me do a headgasket job on his LS/vtec that has been leaking since day 1 he bought the engine. So i towed his car down to my place and work on it. To my surprise, I've ran into so many unexpected surprises with the way it was put together. I've asked the owner of the car who built this motor, and sadly, its an IA member that did this build. I will not call out any names, as it is not a nice thing to do. lol. Folks, if you want things done right, take it to a professional shop or someone that knows what they are doing. You will save alot of money in the end. Block is trash, the head might be ok.The pictures will explain what i ran into as i only wanted to take the head out, straight edge it and the block and change the head gasket.


the block is trashed. all threads for the head bolts are stripped to hell.

The head. Why are the dowel pins splitted in half? beats the hell out of me. thats not even the right dowel pins for it! also, the oil hole wasnt tapped. it was welded and shaved off with something i dont even know. no wonder its leaking.

Guess what head bolts was used on this build? LS head bolts. this doesnt make any sense. the bolts stripped all the threads in the block. the lug nuts used on the 2 long LS head bolts made me laugh all night as i was disassembling everything. lol. I guess the copper spray was used so it can help it seal, as the builder knew it will leak? lol. I guess that the exhaust leak on the header was caused by reusing an old ass gasket? lol

Again folks, take your hard earn money to a professional shop or someone you trust. I only do this on the side, as i have a full time job at a company. The owner of the car decided that he will go ahead and buy a gsr long block. Please dont let this kind of stuff happen to you!

Wow thats some butcher work he deffinetely got :idb:. I wont lie i've re-used an exhaust gasket, but I also cleaned, and re-cleaned it. It worked, with no leaks. But damn, whoever built that motor is a moron. I do dumb things, but that disgusts me!!

i think the guy that built and sold the motor wanted to make some easy money. He even hook up a MSD ignition kit using speaker wires to the distributor! Feel so bad for the owner of the car, as saving a little money here and there, costed him more in the end.

He didnt use the offset dowel pins so it just crushed them. the GE dowel pins are offset for the larger vtec head and smaller ls block

i knew about this motor months ago when EG2 (IA user) pick me up and took me over to POWREDBYHONDA's house to help make the car start after OZ installed an MSD unit on this car. I noticed that the MSD was installed with SPEAKER WIRES to the distributor, fixed that by taking out the fried MSD that OZ installed for him. Then i knew something might be wrong with the motor as there were bad leaks around the headgasket area. ( it also had copper spray on it ). Months later, POWEREDBYHONDA called me, ask me to do a headgaket job as it was leaking bad and couldnt even drive it out of his neighborhood without overheating. (His car has been sitting in the garage eversince OZ sold him the motor and I presume he installed it too). So i towed his car to my place last week and worked on it. It was suppose to just be a headgasket job, untill i was surprised with what i saw. Called POWEREDBYHONDA and told him the story and told him to come and see, as i wanted him to see it with his own eyes. OZ told POWEREDBYHONDA that he should'nt had rape the motor. Damn I always hate to see this kind of shit. Reminds me of a situation with a kid I knew who was impatient and wanted to cheap out. He wanted a GSR swap, I told him to go to Mainstream as they would provide a quality motorset and quality install. He decided to find a "good deal" on ebay. He had the motor swapped in and it lasted about 150 miles before it slung a rod through the side of the block. Live and learn. That's all I can say. Good luck on getting your vehicle back in running order. Even if it means spending a little extra money, do it right THE FIRST TIME!!!! It always saves you money in the end.

i didn't build that motor, it was a used motor from a running car....

More than likely the valves were probably just leaking due to carbon buildup around the valve seat.
