We discussed this exact animation in class the other day... it's pretty open to interpretation (which is what the artist intended), but the basic idea that we got from it is that at the beginning, they are worshipping the one machine, and it gives them some good (the little eye things that drop out). So they figure out how to build a bigger machine that will give them even more good, and forget about the old machine.

We arrived at it being a comment on how, in general, people will give up even their most fundamental religious values in lieu of making a buck. And once they find a way to make that buck, they will exploit it until it eventually fails, sometimes with catastrophic results, and they are in a worse place than they were when they started.
