Question about JDM parts..

Everytime i see a motor or any other JDM parts for that matter, they always have REAL LOW claimed milage...How do people know whats really on the motor? how do they know there isnt 90k on a motor instead of 30k? I know japan is a small island and all so that explains part of it but it always makes me laugh a little when i see "b18C with 30k miles"...How the **** do they know (unless it came with the cluster)

i mean i know of ways to tell by looking at carbon build up and shit like that but without taking down the motor is there a way?

Usually the companies the bring over the motors get papers for the motor and on there should be mileage and everything.

I wouldn't buy motors without papers on them saying how much miles were on it at the time of swap.

I remember reading that in Japan, after driving a car for either so many years or miles you are required to pay some sort of fee that usually costs more than the car itself so it is not worth it, so they just junk the car out & sell the used motors to us which are claimed low mileage.

^^^ that is true kevin, that is the reason u could find jdm fornt ends and fornt clips anytime... i think its when the car gets between 30k and 45k is when people tend to junk them... the taxes would add up more than the car like kevin said... i remember seeing pics of this junk yard in japan with nothing but typers' in it just waiting to be disassembled..

thats true and also they have emission problems. so once a motor gets to a certain milage 30-60k its junked. but than again there is no certain way to tell how much exact milage is on a motor

im glad you mention this too....ive heard alot of shit abou tpeople not being able to pass emissions with swaps...if their emissions are that strict there, how are people over here having issues?

I remember when I had my JDM B16 & it could never pass emissions even with my stock cat, I always had to do something to do it just for it to pass.. Guarenteed to Pass worked!

but anyway I think JDM motors don't pass because they are of higher compression and that will increase 1 of the 3 criterias (NoX I believe) that you must pass in your emissions.

First of all, Japan is not a small island...it's a gigantic linkage of many island that extends from south korea, all the way to Northern China/Russia. It is as long as ATL to Maine. To know true JDM mileage, you will have to get the clip...and what the odometer says..is probably true.

When we used to live in S. Korea, my dad drove only 4-5000 miles a year..so that explains a lot...but engines do have much more wear b/c they are all traffic mileages..

No, the Japanese are smart. Have laws making it very expensive to renew an old car, or go out and buy a new JAPANESE MADE automobile. This boosts their economy.

well also the fact that they read in Kilometers which is intern is less in miles. Like for instance, a car can have 100,000km on it, but really its only like 50k miles on the motor. So that probably explains the low ass milege.

I was talken to a friend of mine who imports motors from Japan and he said that the 30-50K motors are getting rare now they are more and likely to have 60-90K on them IDK why but he just said that its hard to find anything under 60K anymore.....

you have to remember that japan is a really small country. Cities are not so spread out like here. A long ride to work there may be 10 or 15 miles tops. Also, since the roads are so short, the speed limit is lower. it is something like 100km/hr on their "freeway" system. Thats part of the reason why honda's are geared so low. a jdm ITR at 80 mph is turning like 4.5-5k rpm (somewhere around there...), which is pretty high for a cruise speed, but in japan you wouldn't have to worry about it, since at 62 mph (100km/h) the rpm would be less than 4k, which is reasonable. In other words, 75k miles on a jdm engine that is 5-7 years old (98 spec B18C for example) is a little high, 25 would be a little low, and 50 would be about right.

And increases thier waste. It also makes owning an auto harder and out of reach for a lot more people. Not all of Japan has the great mass transit systems of tokyo.
